No stopping
Stand–up comedy legend returned to resort
with his tickling stick – and told Champion
reporter David Raven why he loves Southport
HE MIGHT turn 86 later this year but there is
no stopping stand up comedy legend Ken Dodd
as he returns to Southport next week with a
mind full of new gags and a heart full of
happiness.
Even as a twentysomething journalist, it was a
challenge to keep up with the lightening speed
of his gags and the sheer intensity of his acerbic
wit during our conversation.
He answered the phone with: “Hello David!
So are you a Champion beer drinker or a
Champion bird puller?!”
I laughed and tried – but failed to ask my first
question.
“But before you start there’s something you
must know. There are two questions every
single journalist always asks me in an
interview, but I won’t tell you what they are
until you’ve finished.”
Responding with a slight pause, before trying
not to ask anything too obvious – I muttered
something about Southport which was
scribbled down on my notepad.
“I love Southport it’s a great town – I’ve been
going to Southport for a long long time, long
before you were born and probably even before
your father was born!
“I’ve done the Little Theatre, lots of shows at
the Floral Hall and I used to feature on Sunday
afternoons at the Scala Cinema with Bill
Gregson and his band as a guest artist.
“I’ve had some wonderful nights in
Southport, the beauty of the place is it’s central,
so it brings people down from all around the
country.”

He went on: “I remember due to some bizarre
boundary changes, Southport decided they
would build a new theatre, but unfortunately
they forgot to build a dressing room!
“So they put it on as an afterthought – it was
just a row of little sheds glued on to the back of
the theatre and they were so small that if you
wanted to change your mind you had to go
outside!
