No longer just poorest<br />
who seek debt advice<br />

IT’S no longer just the poorest and vulnerable<br />
who need debt advice but <strong>home</strong>owners who<br />
cannot pay their mortgage according to a<br />
charity worker.<br />
Lynda Cooper, runs the Christians Against<br />
Poverty (CAP) service <strong>for</strong> people in South<br />
Sefton and North Liverpool which gives advice<br />
on debt management and visits people to<br />
discuss possible arrangements <strong>for</strong> repayment.<br />
The <strong>for</strong>mer Deyes High School pupil told<br />
Sefton Central MP Bill Esterson, at his surgery<br />
in Maghull, that she has seen a sharp increase<br />
in the number of people who have lost their job<br />
or seen their business collapse coming with<br />
debt problems.<br />
“It used to be the poorest, most vulnerable<br />
people who asked <strong>for</strong> help,” she said. “Now<br />
there is a new group who never asked <strong>for</strong> help<br />
be<strong>for</strong>e, including <strong>home</strong> owners who cannot<br />
pay the mortgage.”<br />
She said: “A typical situation <strong>for</strong> a family who<br />
need a Debt Relief Order is that they take out a<br />
payday loan, often <strong>for</strong> as little as £100.<br />
“But because they can’t, or don’t, make a full<br />
repayment, within a few months that loan is<br />
worth £800 or more. So another aspect of the<br />
CAP’s work is debt counselling. CAP can<br />
arrange debt relief orders – which enables<br />
most people to find a way of clearing debts – or<br />
in some cases, bankruptcy is considered.”<br />
The CAP speaks directly to banks and other<br />
creditors and take away some of the stress of<br />
managing debts which often cannot be paid<br />
without some kind of arrangement.<br />
