MARINE should have gleaned
some return from the match, but
were again let down by missing
some excellent chances.
Town came close to opening the
scoring early on, a free kick fro
coming off a Marine head and
back in to play via the bar, centre
the rebound but seeing his shot
Maghull hold on to
First Division status
MAGHULL’S unbeaten five game run
in the First Division of the Carlsberg
West Cheshire League came to an end
when Chester based outfit Blacon
came to Old Hall Field and returned
home with all three points courtesy of
a 4–2 victory.
Previously in midweek Maghull had
secured their First Division status
when they shared four goals at home
against fellow strugglers Upton.
But the pressure of having to win
matches showed in these last two
performances which fell well below
FLEETWOOD Hesketh lost
by 79 runs at Ormskirk in
the Ray Digman Trophy,
the hosts decided to bat
first and put 256–7 on the
board with skipper Ian
Robinson (60) top scoring
whilst his opposite
number Paul Mullen took
3–43. In reply 4–33 from
I love Marine but it’s the
right time to go: Lynch
Reserve team to be scrapped to focus on youth
MARINE have scrapped
its reserve team that has
been running for over
100 years in order to
focus on youth devel–
opment up to the Under
18s age group.
From this coming
the standard set in the previous four
outings. It was an injury ravaged
squad that forced manager Steve
Sumner to make no fewer than eight
changes for the visit of Blacon and
their inexperience was plain for all to
see as they found themselves three
goals down at the interval.
Sumner rang the changes in the
second introducing all three
substitutes which enabled them claw
their way back to within a single goal
of their opponents.
However all hopes were thwarted
Owen Griffiths help
restrict the visitor’s to
177–6 with Derek Sykes
(47) top scoring.
Maghull beat Ainsdale in
a one sided affair at Old
Hall Field, the hosts made
259–9 with Chris Barlow
(61) and Chris Tonge (51)
both in good touch. In
MARINE are looking for a new
manager after Kevin Lynch stepped
down this week.
The 38–year–old, who saw a
consistent level of success at the
Arriva Stadium including a
memorable FA Cup run, handed in his
notice at a meeting on Sunday with
chairman Paul Leary.
His last game in charge of the
Mariners will be the final league game
this coming Saturday away at Ilkeston
Town.
Marine manager Kevin Lynch said:
“This is a real sad day for me but I feel
it’s the right time for me and the club
to call it a day. Marine is such a
fantastic club and will always remain
close to my heart.
“The four years have been a great
learning curve and an excellent
grounding for me to learn as a
manager and I am so grateful for the
opportunity Marine gave me.
season the Marine Youth
team, members of the
North West Youth
Alliance, will play its
Sunday home league
games at the Arriva
stadium.
Marine chairman Paul
Report by David Raven
reply the visitors
crumbled to 107 (Andy
Barlow 40) all out as Ryan
Swiers (4–29) and Jack
Snowden (3–13) bowled
the hosts to victory.
Saturday’s opening
league fixtures are:
Hightown v New
Brighton, Maghull v
Leary said: “This has
been a very difficult
decision for our football
club that has run a
reserve team for over
100 years.
“However, priority is
now placed on the
when Blacon grabbed a fourth ten
minutes from time. Dave Hughes and
Jack McDowell netted for Maghull.
The season drew to a close on
Monday evening when Champions
Heswall visited Old Hall Field when
the spoils were shared in a one one
draw.
The final home league game of the
season is a Carlsberg West Cheshire
Division Two match which sees
Maghull Reserves entertain Manor
Athletic in an encounter which kicks
off at 3pm
Marine look for
new manager
“Paul Leary has been like a father
figure to me and will forever be a
special friend of mine, as well as the
people on the committee at Marine.”
Marine are now looking to recruit a
new qualified manager with the
experience.
Marine chairman Paul Leary said: “It
was a sad day for me following the
joint decision by Kevin and I to part
ways after our final game of the
season on Saturday.
“I enjoyed working with him over
the last four seasons but in the end we
both have to consider the best thing to
do and our parting is completely
amicable.
“I thank Kevin for the work he has
put in at Marine in the last four
seasons.
“He has a real desire to succeed as a
football manager and I wish him well
for the future.”
