The midfielder participated in a range of interactive football–related games with 10 of the pupils from the school last Thursday. Pienaar showed off his top soccer skills and taught the pupils a few of his own football tricks he uses on the pitch, making it an enjoyable day for all the children who took part. Afterwards, the Everton player took part in signing autographs for all the children and they each had their own photograph taken with the midfielder to keep as a memory of the day. The Champion • Wednesday 1 May 2013 Sky’s the limit for Jamie! Report by David Raven JAMIE Carragher is set to join the Sky Sports punditry team for the 2013/14 season. The 35–year–old, who will retire from Liverpool Football Club at the end of the current campaign, will team up with former Anfield stars Jamie Redknapp and Graeme Souness, and former Manchester United full–back Gary Neville, to provide expert analysis as part of the broadcaster’s football coverage next season. Carragher, who grew up in Bootle but now lives in Blundellsands, has made more than 730 appearances during his career at Liverpool. He had been offered a number of punditry jobs when he retires but the former England defender said: “I watch Sky Sports all the time and I’m a huge fan. I can’t wait to be part of their coverage and work with the best in the business. “What Sky has done for football for over 20 years is incredible and I’m thrilled to be part of Retail partner sought for Breck Road post office BRECK Road is at risk of losing its Crown Post Office. Bosses announced yesterday that retailers, whether they be local or national, are being offered the chance to take over the service from Breck Road in order to save its future. The branch is one of 70 Crown Post Offices that are seeking retail partners to help secure itheir future. Crown branches, of which there are currently 370 across the UK, are directly managed by the Post Office and based in high streets and city centres across the UK. Kevin Gilliland, network and sales director at the Post Office, said: “We must change the way the branch operates to ensure long–term viability and to maintain services for people across the area. “We already have more than 10,000 branches which operate through franchises and agreements with retailers so we know this model works. “We welcome approaches from potential retail partners who want to work with us to provide our customers with high levels of customer service and easy access to Post Office products from a modern retail space.” The decision to offer crown branches to retailers is a result of the network losing £40 million a year of public money. “Partnering 70 branches with retailers and investing £70 million in 300 Crown branches is the best way to keep our branches on high streets and city centres across the UK”, added Kevin. If a suitable retailer is found then a six–week public consultation will be carried out before any move takes place. The intention is that, subject to the public consultation, the Breck Road branch will be transferred to a third–party retail operator before April 2015. DON’T FORGET! The neighbourhood officers were patrolling the Stanley Road area on Monday, Aprl 29, when they discovered the first weapon, believed to be a flare gun, in bushes on waste ground near to the railway line. The scene was secured and specialist Matrix officers carried out a further search which led to the discovery of a shotgun and ammunition. The search is continuing around the wasteland and the two weapons are now being forensically examined. Superintendent Mark Wiggins from Liverpool North command team, said: “This was excellent work by dedicated neighbourhood officers who were vigilant enough to spot a hidden weapon during the course of their patrols. “A further weapon – a shotgun – was discovered at the same site following a wider search, along with shotgun ammunition. A Police launch probe after guns and ammo find Report by Holly Rummens MERSEYSIDE Police have discovered a substantial amount of cannabis. Specialist Matrix officers executed a misuse of drugs warrant at a property on Bankhall Street, Kirkdale, shortly after 3pm on Monday, April 29 after a strong smell of the drug had alerted colleagues. Following a search of the two–storey warehouse, a cannabis ‘farm’, consisting of about 1,000 plants, and a sophisticated hydroponics system were discovered. Crime scene investigators attended and the items are in the process of being removed for further examination. A Merseyside Police spokesperson, said: “We take the cultivation of cannabis “These seizures represent a significant blow to the criminals who had been hiding them to use on our streets and show how hard officers in Merseyside Police are working alongside the community to try and tackle the issue of gun crime and make neighbourhoods safer.” Anyone with information about where guns are being stored or the criminals who use them is urged to the call the Matrix Unit on 0151 777 5699 or leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Audrey Halliday, 22, of Chester Avenue, Bootle pleaded guilty at Sefton Magistrates to causing unnecessary suffering to Mason, a male rottweiler, by failing to investigate the causes of its poor condition and weight loss which led to its death while in her care. Ruth Lee, 44, of Hereford Drive, Bootle pleaded guilty to failing to investigate the causes of the poor condition and weight loss of Sam, a female rottweiler, leading to its collapse and having to be put down. Mr Leeman, representing the pair, said there was a “lot of mitigation” due to the ill health of the women and that a pre–sentence report was required. The prosecution’s case and sentencing were adjourned until May 15.
