The idea has been put forward by Maghull Town Team, which has received a £17,000 contribution from Sefton Council. The group, made up of local businesses, residents and Maghull town councillors, was formed to kick–start the rejuvenation of the town centre. One proposal is the creation of a retail business incubator, where aspiring entrepreneurs can try out their business ideas by having access to shop space in the square (at a nominal rent) without having to take on a huge early commitment. Town Team member, Councillor Patrick McKinley, said he hoped it would encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to make Maghull their base for business. He said: “We are exploring the potential for this with the Square’s owners,” he said. “These pop–up shops are proving popular in other areas.” Businessman Steve Maxwell A MAGHULL charity worker has raised thousands to help children in Kenya receive a better education and vital medical care. Phil Ball, along with his 11 companions, completed the eight–hour marathon walk to help towards the build of a school in Kenya along with help from the charity To Kenya With Love. The walk, which raised £3,000, took place on Saturday, April 20, setting off at 7am from the Maghull Baptist Church carrying down towards the Pier Head and finishing at Sefton Park. Phil and his partner Diane moved to Kisumu, Kenya, for over three years where they helped grow and establish a sponsorship scheme helping poor children gain a good education and access vital medical care when needed. The pair came back home to Maghull in 2006 to start their own family. This didn’t stop them having an impact on the charity, they still fundraise for the charity to help towards the of Bradley J Lewis said he is confident the Town Team will be able to make Maghull’s Central Square the hub of the community. “We have some great ideas and now we have some funding, we’ve a good base to start putting those ideas into action,” he said. “We all agree that the Town Team needs more involvement from the local community, so anyone who would like to become involved is very welcome.” Sefton’s cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Ian Maher, said he was delighted the council was supporting Town Team. Simon Newberry primary school, named after the charity’s founder, now has over 250 children who all have access to a good education, uniforms, shoes and books. This also means the children can get fed at the school which is often their only meal of the day and can receive medical care when needed. The school however, needs the second floor to be built which will create another four classrooms meaning another 300 children will be able to attend the school. Diane Ball, trustee of To Kenya With Love said: “We planned on building the school in the slum area so that it meant the children didn’t have to travel far to get an education. “The school is now in the top three schools of Kenya for poetry and French, it is doing really well, and we are looking forward to seeing the rest of the school being built.” The group finished the marathon walk at around 3pm and was greeted by family and friends who cheered them on. She spoke to many more of them than we had planned in the short time available. “She was lovely with them, asking about their work, visiting the reception and helping one child to solve a puzzle in the library.” During the official opening, Ms Kelley thanked “all those who made this magnificent building possible. Police were called when Karl Winrow, 43, of Fouracres, Maghull, appeared unconscious behind the wheel of his Mercedes on Saville Road, Lydiate, at 11.45 am on April 9. Prosecutor Brian O’Connor told Sefton Magistrates on April 26 that when officers arrived it appeared that Winrow had fallen asleep after drinking from a 35cl bottle of whisky, which was at his feet. The keys were said to have been in the ignition, he was reclining in the seat, and the radio was on. When woken up, “He was incoherent and not able to speak properly”, he said. Subsequent breath tests revealed 133mg alcohol per 100ml breath (the legal limit being 35mg/100ml). Report by Jim Sharpe WITH 150 pupils from 11 local primary schools – and help from sixth formers from Maghull High and Maricourt RC High – taking part in a mammoth canal side cleanup, the six–mile stretch between Wango Lane bridge in Aintree Village and Pygons Hill Lane at the Northern edge of Lydiate has never looked smarter.
