Human Genome Project vs International HapMap Project In its scope and potential consequences, the International HapMap Project has much in common with the Human Genome Project, which sequenced the human genome. Both projects have been scientifically ambitious and technologically demanding, have involved intense international collaboration, have been dedicated to the rapid release of data into the public domain, and promise to have profound implications for our understanding of human biology and human health. Whereas the sequencing project covered the entire genome, including the 99.9% of the genome where we are all the same, the HapMap will characterize the common patterns within the 0.1% where we differ from each other.
