They estimate that genotypes related to just five variants in three different genes can explain 50% of the risk of developing AMD The new genetic common variant identified was found in a non-coding region of the Complement Factor H (CFH) gene, other variants of which were recently shown to be associated with the risk of developing AMD. In addition to CFH on chromosome 1 the complement factor B (BF) gene on chromosome 6 complement component 2 (C2) gene on chromosome 6 a common variant (A69S) is in hypothetical gene LOC387715 on chromosome 10. Interestingly, these three genes do not appear to interact directly, but instead contribute to the risk of AMD independently.
