Curriculum Overview The Art Institute of Chicago MAPS Curriculum: Understanding Environments and Values Lessons That Develop Reading and Writing Skills as Students Interpret Art to Understand and Communicate about Important Topics in Science and Social Studies Lessons for 4th Grade Overview Students apply reading and writing skills as they learn about topics represented in artworks. The lessons complement the core curriculum in reading, science, social studies and writing. The lessons emphasize literacy development. Students reinforce reading skills as they infer main ideas of works of art and write about what they learn. Activities include vocabulary development and art-making in which students communicate the ideas they learn through their own drawings. Each lesson includes an Extended Writing question based on a relevant reading. Teachers may use the lessons in conjunction with language arts or content development. The lessons also can be used in conjunction with science or social studies curriculum so that students develop content knowledge as well as literacy skills. The topics of the lessons match fourth-grade content requirements. 6 • Understanding Environments and Values
Curriculum Overview The Eight Lessons Lessons That Develop Literacy as Students Learn about Environments These three lessons build reading and writing as students focus on environments, aligning with ISAT science requirements and the CMSI curriculum—Earth Features and Changes, Land and Water. Those three lessons also correlate with the fourth grade social studies focus on geographic regions. • Picturing, Reading, and Writing about American Environments • Oceans and Rivers: Northeast Environments • People and Environments of the American West Lessons That Develop Literacy as Students Learn about Themes of Social Studies These four lessons apply reading and writing skills as students analyze works of art that are related to themes aligned with SCRMA and trade books. • The City and the Country • Choices • Shared Values • How to Interpret Symbols: Maps and Images Field Trip Guide • Reading Art: A Trip to the Art Institute This lesson organizes a field trip to The Art Institute of Chicago that accompanies any of the other seven lessons.
