of Horrors;" this year they
started out on it. Much credit
should be given to the U.S.
Design team of Dave Stanford
and Andy Hollar. They have
responded to the grass roots
criticism of last year's course
design and worked hard to make
the course of fire this year one
that was balanced for all of the
shooters.
This year's computer stage,
"Junk Yard Horrors" was a good
example of the work they put
into producing a well-balanced
course of fire. Last year the
computer stage was a fixed time
course of fire with targets that
appeared and disappeared. The
window of opportunity on some
of the targets was so brief that
only a top Master Class shooter
could engage them. This year
the stage was changed to a
Comstock event. Once the
targets appeared they bobbed
back and forth, and after
approximately 40 seconds they
remained in full view. The
challenge for all shooters was to
see how fast you could run it
and get all of your hits.
Team Colt's Barnhart was
the first shooter to suffer from
prototype bugs. Barnhart
experienced a feeding problem
on his run but he cleared it
quickly to get a good hit factor.
Dillon Precision's Arnt Myhre
posted the highest score on the
Super Squad, but at the end of
the tournament that score was
only good enough for fourth
place on the stage. This yeax,
quite a few shooters that would
compete in the Colt Top Sixteen
Shootoffs would come from other
squads. The stage win did not
go to a Master Class shooter,
but to A-Class competitor Aaron
Bush. Bush was the only A-
Class shooter to finish in this
year's Top 16.
Second place on the stage
went to New Jersey police officer
Bruce Piatt. Piatt finished 10th
winning the Top Law
Enforcement award. Third on
the stage was Eric Stafford;
Stafford, who was not on the
Super Squad, will be next year
as he finished eighth overall.
The second stage the Super
Squad faced on the first day was
100-point Comstock field course
''Pipe Yard." This time the top
three shooters on the stage
would all come from the Super
Squad. Canadian Matt McLearn
won the field course which
required shooters to engage two
of the new US Poppers and then
target arrays through 50-gallon
drums at different heights.
Right behind him was Todd
Jarrett, a refrigeration and air
conditioning mechanic from
Virginia. Pro shooter Koenig
took third place honors on the
stage; Barnhart, the defending
National Champion, finished
sixth on the stage.
If Barnhart had gotten off to
a slow start on Monday, he
broke away from the pack on
Tuesday. The Super Squad
started the day off on two
Virginia Count speed shoots,
"Turn the Lights Out" and "At
The Diner." "The Burner"
dominated the two stages. Todd
Jarrett was second on Stage 8
and Jeff Dixon third. They
traded places on stage 9 with
Dixon finishing second and
Jarrett right behind him.
Since the match had started,
people had been placing side
bets on who would win this
year's Nationals. Besides the
factory shooters, two names kept
being mentioned: Todd Jarrett,
who had won the Miller
Invitational, and Matt McLearn,
who had most recently won the
Golden Gate Championship.
Stage 10, "The Streets of ICh4i"
gave Jaxrett a chance to show
that he was a real contender as
he won the field course. Behind
