COLORADO STATE CHAMPS
By: Roscoe Livingston CL-46
The San Juan Shooting
Range was the host for the 1991
Colorado State Championship.
Their facility overlooks not only
Montrose and the Black Canyon
National Park area to the northeast,
but also a full panoramic
view of the San Juan Mountain
Range stretching to the southwest.
What can you say about
Colorado? It doesn't seem to
matter where you travel, you
pass through historic mining
sites (Placerville, Telluride,
Mesa Verde), you go over ten
thousand foot passes, and you
see some of the most beautiful
and breath-taking scenery available
any place in the world. The
gold camps no longer mine gold,
,
but as ski resorts they are richer
than ever.
The stages were excellent,
with good design and construction.
Some stages from World
Shoot IX were adapted,as well
as stages from various matches
around the U.S., a couple of
original ones, and a classifier
were used.
The temperature soared to
100 and there were one or two
heat casualties each day. I guess
people go to Colorado to be cool
in the summer, and when it is
hot they don't know how to
handle it. Seeking shade and
drinking plenty of liquid was the
correct approach--not standing
out watching all the action.
Stage I, Hell Nuts + 6,
found Mike Yorke in the lead;
Stage II, Theirs, had Ross Dean
as stage winner. Stage III was
entitled Mine, both Stage II and
III were six-round stages with
times in the 3 to 4 second range.
A miss on steel could drop you
20 places. The key on these low
point stages was--don't push, be
smooth, a_nd get through it with
the least amount of a disaster
factor. Doug Boykin zipped
Stage III with a 3.01 time to
take the stage.
On Stage IV, San Juan
Standards, Ron Avery took top
honors. Keep in mind that with
the furthest shot being 50 feet,
the Standards were not exactly
an accuracy test for scopes. In
fact, the top 2 places were open
sight guns.
Stage V, East Wall, was won
by Doug Boykin; Stage VI,
Speed Now, was dominated by
