one thing above is good. Too
much is bad. A delicate mix is
the ultimate. Here are some
general rules in course set-up
that I've found to be popular as
well as a true test of skill in a
well-rounded IPSC environment.
DISTANCE/HIT
AREA RATIOS
Never set targets past 50
yards. Never obscure any portion
of a target past 25 yards.
Always leave at least one-half
body "A" zone visible at distance
s past 1 2 yards.
Swinger/movers should be accomplishable
by any nationallyranked
''C'' class shooter. Not a
matter of spray n' pray luck.
Any box to box movement should
be at least 4 paces and at most
8. Any less, advantages high
capacity; any more advantages
the track star. Never have more
than 50% of total targets in one
stage closer than 8 yards.
PROPS
Never allow procedures to
spend more than 50% of a total
run time in non-shooting activity;
ie., doing a 25 yard sprint to
box "A", and firing 6 quick shots.
Always check shot angles from
tip-toes and knees. The points
of view from 5-footers to 6-footers
must be similar! Be cognizant
of advantage/disadvantages
of larger and smaller shooters;
ie., tunnels, walls, etc. Never
require spare ammo retrieval
from props! This old trick,
advantages high-capacity beyond
the catch-up.
The general standard by
which to rate good courses is in
asking this: Can any "C" class
shooter accomplish this stage
with all the hits, given a reasonable
amount of time? If the
answer is yes, and your stages
fall into the guidelines above,
you've probably got a match that
will be well-remembered by all.
R,emember, when you give IPSC
shooters a little rope (in accom-
plishable stages) and they hang
themselves, they'll laugh and
shake your hand. But if they're
doomed before stepping into the
box you'll get mutiny for sure!
I've compiled my own personal
booklet on course design
which includes some formal
guidelines drawn up by J. Michael
Plaxco, who really put
together some fantastic "A" to
"Z" how-tos on the matter. They
include many absolutes on hittarget
area/distance ratios,
shooting box distances, etc.
As our sport grows and
becomes more refined, I believe
that the rules governing course
design must become a bit more
definitive. This will create
standardization needed in all
IPSC competition, and especially
so on the international level
where one can find some truly
bizarre set-ups.
