The other surprise course
was "Officer Needs Assistance."
In the second part of this field
course the competitor had to
simulate the total disabling of
her pistol. For safety reasons it
was decided that the shooter
would holster a safe gun before
completing the course.
The competitor started
seated in a chair with her gun
on a table. She engaged the
first array of targets and proceeded
towards the "backyard
fence,'' before crossing a threshold
she engaged a second target
array and then holstered a safe
gun.
Around the "back yard'' fence
and out of sight of the gallery
was a "downed" officer and three
hostile targets. To finish the
course the lady competitor had
to engage the final three targets
with the equipment she found
there. The big question was
what kind of equipment was
around the fence and what
condition was it in to use. The
handgun lying on the ground,
along with some loose rounds,
was a Smith & Wesson
double-action revolver with six
spent cases in it. The
competitor had to pick-up the
revolver, anaylze that it was
empty, eject the six fired cases,
and load it before engaging the
final three targets. Judy Ross
won this stage. CAROL WINE
was this year's Ladies' Champion.
Judy Woolley finished
second, and in third place was
Kerry Lathwell. Other ladies in
the top ten from fourth place
down were: Sheila Brey, Betty
Jo Ratliff, Cinday Lynn
Fullhart, Kelley Stewart, Donna
Burch, Marsha Dean and Sandie
Layton.
Carol Wine attributed her
win to the coaching she has
received from her husband,
Floyd Wine. Floyd said that it
was Carol's hard work and
determination which paid off for
her. "Carol gets up every
morning and runs four miles
and then dry fires for an hour
before going to work." he
explained. After work she heads
to the range to get an hour or so
of practice in before heading
home. Before a major
tournament like the U.S.
Nationals the Wines try to
practice at least 300 rounds a
day.
