AREA I CHAMPIONSHIPS
By: George Beam A-16134
The 1991 Area I Championship
was held in Medford, OR
and hosted by Southern Oregon
PSA on June 28-30th. The
match consisted of eight courses
of fire vvith a minimum of 117
rounds. With an estimated
$20,000 in prizes, all 160 competitors
had something to look
forward to on Saturday night at
the awards banquet.
You started the day at the
local ''Cash 'n Carry" (Stage
One). Two targets at 30 ft. were
engaged first. Moving up to a
55 gal. drum with a bar across
the top, you knelt down to get
a good look at 2 more targets
and a pepper popper with a noshoot
behind it. Mike Voigt
scored the best on this course
before he found himself "Making
a Run For the Border" (Stage
Two).
Kneeling down, checking the
front tire on your pickup, you
stood, turned and engaged 3
targets with 2 no-shoots in front
of them. Moving to the rear of
the pickup, you sighted 3 targets
through the port in a barricade
before moving up the border
where you engaged 2 targets
hidden behind no-shoots and 2
pepper poppers. Mike Mortown
scored the highest here.
Getting tired, you decided to
sit down at the "Laid Back
Blaster" (Stage Three). Starting
with legs crossed and fingers
laced behind your head, you
suddenly had to engage 2
targets and 2 pepper poppers
nearby. Larry Duckett outshot
everyone else on this stage.
Didn't get enough rest sitting
there? Moving on you lay down
on a nice soft mat becoming a
"Laid Down Blaster" (Stage
Four). When the alarm rang,
you rolled over and engaged 2
targets and 2 pepper poppers
through a 16" high port. Jim
Wall got the most rest and the
highest score out of this course.
At Stage Five you met
Newman and Redford at "The
Sting II." First a pepper popper
(1/2 hard cover), when hit,
activated a rocking target
moving in and out of view
behind a hard cover. The next
pepper poppers, #2 and #3, when
luiocked down, activated 2
turning targets visible for about
2 seconds. Then how about an
