McLearn, who was the only
other contender, had been
shooting a good match. The

started through the doorway,
then hesitated and came back.
He danced at the doorway for
aLmost five seconds, dropping his
hit factor and knocking himself
out of the race.

field had spread out. Jarrett
was clearly in the lead with
Barnhart a distant second.
Koenig had moved into third
ahead of McLearn, while
Leatham held down fifth place.
At this point, the match was
Jarrett's to lose, and speculation
was rampant about whether
Jarrett had matured enough as
a shooter to handle the pressiu-e.
However, the last course,
"Journalist in Kuwait," was not
a difficult stage. There were
only two no-shoot targets in any
of the shooting arrays and in
both cases they were wide open
and did not obscure any of the
targets.
Jarrett's lead caused him no
anxiety, in fact, the 16-point
lead was comforting and he slept
well that night. The next day,
even as he watched Barnhart
btum the course to win the stage,
Jarrett was relaxed. Koenig was
equally determined and he
scored for second place. None of
this fazed Jarrett. He didn't try
to change his pace and shoot
conservatively. He shot his
same smooth but blistering pace
without spilling the champagne,
which he could later guzzle
down as the new U.S. National
Champion.
With the overall USPSA
National Championships won by
an amateur shooter, everyone's
attention turned to the ladies
match. The reigning U.S.
National Ladies Champion,
Debbie Jaraes, was unable to
attend the tournament.
However, last year's ladies
overall champion, Canadian
Kerry Lathwell, was there to
defend her title. Most of the
attention focused on the
American ladies who were likely
to return the overall
championship to the United
