Rob Leatham, followed closely
by Mike Voigt. This was the
only non-published course. It
was received just prior to the
match and no one had a chance
to practice it.
Stage VII, Bagman, was an
agility drill and one of the World
Shoot stages. Matt Burkett
jumped up off the low platform,
threw off a blanket, shot 3
targets at 10 yards, ran 12 yards
and popped 3 more targets
which were poised at a 15 degree
reclined position 2 times
each in 6.77 seconds. Think
about it--that was quick! Matt
took top A honors and won the
stage.
Stage VIII, Practice Well,
found a strong Michael Voigt
winning the stage. He started
in Box A, shot 3 targets at 12
yards, ran down range 10 yards
and slightly to the left and shot
3 more targets around a well.
Stage IX found Russ James
blowing out all comers by 9
percentage points.
The last stage, Take Cover,
was a modified World Shoot 16-
round stage. The competitor
shot from either of two ports
around two 50 gallon drums.
Rob Leatham won with Ron
Avery and Mike Yorke close on
his tail.
The overall found Ron Avery
match winner with Rob Leatham
6 hundredths of a point in second
place. Ron took Top Cop
award also, which gave him a
Leffel and Leffel custom gun for
match winner and a Barlow's
Custom Gun for Top Cop.
The rest of the top 16 were
Mike Yorke, Mike Voigt, Doug
Boykin, Arnt Myhre, Charlie
Putman, Brad Hertz, Russ
James, Larry Spain, Ron Dean,
Bennie Cooley, Doug Evancic,
Dan Nigro, Gary Wilburn and
Bob Ryckman. The final round
found Mike Voigt and Doug
Boykin facing each other for Top
Gun. When the smoke cleared,
Doug Boykin was shoot-off
winner.
The top 8 ladies were Debby
James, Kippi Boykin, Carol
Wine, Shirley Hamilton, Ann
Livingston, Diane Lamb, Kathy
Barnes, and Claudia Ingoglia.
The winner of the ladies' shootoff
was Shirley Hamilton.
In summing up the match--
the stages were well thought out
and gave away little advantage
to high capacity guns, and no
advantage whatsoever to scoped
guns. It comes right down to
match design as to what dictates
a good stage, one that is fair to
all guns and tests only the skill
of the competitor. All other
arguments are moot!! I will
comment that the shoot-offs
were just the opposite. If you
didn't have a scope—forget it--no
brass ring. The targets were a
little too challenging for fast
open-sight shooting. This is
something that all match directors
will have to start considering
in the future.
