Mammalsof two connected reintroducednuclei thatwould strengthen theremnant population. Goal 2: Identification ofoptimal areas(regarding to habitat, resources and threats)for the re-introductionwithin the formerIberian lynx range inAndalusia. Goal 3: Correction ofmain limiting factorsthrough habitatmanagement, resourceimprovement, reduction Typical Iberian lynx habitat © Miguel Simonof threats and obtaininga strong social support for re-introduction. Goal 4: Provide enough individuals (both wild-born and captive-born) to createtwo self-sustaining populations (connected to each other), in 15 years. Goal 5: Evaluate effectiveness of all processes in order to establish useful reintroductionprotocols for the species.Success Indicators Indicator 1: Establishment of 15 breeding females per area after 7 years ofreleases. Indicator 2: Establishment of 30 breeding females per area after 15 years ofreleases. Indicator 3: Achieve annual survival rates higher than 50% in releasedindividuals. Indicator 4: Obtain the interconnection of areas of presence with areas of reintroductionto reach an only meta-population. Indicator 5: Down-list the IUCN threat category of the Iberian lynx after 10years of releases.Project SummaryFeasibility: The Iberian lynx need well-preserved Mediterranean scrubland andhigh wild rabbit (its staple prey) densities. Habitat transformation (mainly due toboth forestry plantations and infrastructure development) has provoked suitablehabitat to be restricted to hunting private lands. Thus, collaborative agreementswith owners and hunting societies are essential in Iberian lynx conservation(Simón et al., 2012, 2013). After a careful selection and a correction of limitingfactors in optimal re-introduction areas in Andalusia, and once a strong socialsupport was guaranteed, releases began in early 2010. The re-introductionprogram was designed by a multidisciplinary team and approved in aninternational seminar. All the stages of the program are being covered accordingthe planned agenda.
