The species is also included inSchedule I of the Wildlife (protection) Act 1972 enacted by the Government ofIndia ensuring high priority in conservation of the species. The greater onehornedrhino once ranged throughout the entire stretch of the Indo-GangeticPlain of the Indian subcontinent,along the Indus, Ganges andBrahmaputra river basins,from Pakistan to the Indian-Burmese border, including partsof Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan butexcessive hunting reduced theirnatural habitat drastically. Today,about 3,250 rhinos live in the wild inIndia and Nepal out of which 2,500are found in India's Assam alone.They prefer the alluvial plaingrasslands of the Terai andBrahmaputra floodplain. As a resultof habitat destruction and climaticchanges their range has graduallybeen reduced and today, their rangehas further shrunk to a few pockets insouthern Nepal (Chitwan NationalPark (NP), Bardia National Park andSukhlaphanta Wildlife Reserve),Uttar Pradesh of India (Dudhwa NP),Greater one-horned rhino northern Bengal (Garumara National164
