KANSAS AT A GLANCEKansas conducted its first clean sweep in 1996. Originally, the Kansas Departmentof Health and Environment (KDHE) provided grants to counties, which collectedand disposed of the pesticides. In 2000 the structure changed and now the programsare sponsored entirely by KDHE with technical assistance from the Department ofAgriculture. The program, which has collected over 337,000 pounds of pesticides,is currently funded from solid waste tipping fees.Collection HistoryProducts collected:PesticidesYear of first collection: 1996Program Status:Permanently fundedQuantity Collected (lbs.)160,000140,000120,000100,00080,00060,00040,00020,0000Quantity of Pesticides CollectedYear96,94246,19719,23540,975134,106Pre 1989 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000Amount collectedto date:337,455 lbs.Source:Solid waste tipping fee and, in 1997, an EPA grantProgram Funding Participant fee collected: No fee for farmers and ranchers; others charged$1.15 per poundCost information:Disposal cost is generally $1.15 per pound.Dioxins are $6.50 per pound and cylinders are $100.00 eachCollection LogisticsMethod of collection: Single day events.
