Down atMontrose, in the very heart of thesand hill region, and high up on asand ridge amid the long leafedpines, is where '^the weak growstrong" and the consumptives getwell. The little sanatorium up therewas reopened under the managementof the State Board of Health onlya few weeks ago, but already applicationshave been made for somethinglike 35 or 40 of the fifty bedsnow available.Within a few weeks more the presentbuildings will be filled. Fortunately,an extension to the presentinstitution is well under way, andabout the last of February it willbe ready to take in 75 additionalpatients.Sanatorium life is made as attractivefor the patients enrolled as itis possible to make it, and infinitelybetter in every way for sick folksthan the average home. The patientis informed when he arrivesthat his entire business for the nextfew months is to get well. He isshown how and why people get tuberculosis,and is also shown howthe disease is combated, very largelyby just the reverse methods of livingfrom those which brought about thecondition. It is explained how foulair and closed bedroom windows tendto foster tuberculosis. From the accompanyingcuts, as well as thatshown on the front cover page, itwill be seen how the patient is shownby example, as well as precept, aboutthe marvelous curative power offresh air.The food given the patients is thevery best that money can buy. Consumptionis a wasting disease. Infact, loss of weight is one of the veryfirst symptoms. A competent dietitianis in charge of the kitchen anddining room, and the diet of everypatient is carefully watched and supervised.In fighting consumption,good, first class food, plenty of it,properly cooked and served in anappetizing way, counts for a tremendouslot.The subject of very careful personalhygiene is taught every patient,not only by means, of regularlectures by the medical director, butalso according to careful personalsupervision of the nurses. A recentvisit to the sanatorium showed suchscrupulous cleanliness and a degreeof carefulness on the part of the patientsthat one could not help feelingthat, so far as the danger of con-
