268 THE HEALTH Bl'LLETIX,than to expect them to install the $20to $50 sanitary privy arrangementswe used to recommend. In view ofsatisfactory experience in the suburbsof cities and towns and in cottonmill communities, where water andsewer connections were out of thequestion, we know of no better formof privy than the one here shown. Inshould have a lid, and it may be providedwith screened ventilators atboth ends. It should be part of thescavenger's duty to see that the seatbox is always kept fly-tight. Thereshould he no back door to the privy. It is too small a house for two doors, and, besides, this back door increasesthe danger from fliesa hundred fold.NORTH CAROLINASTATE BOARD OF HEALTHSTANDARD SANITARV PPIVYInteriorPerspecfivDioqonal, screened-^verttJofoi^s G RanSANITARY PRIVY FOR CITY USE.The fecal matter is collected in cans and remolded throu jh the front door at least once a week.Sanitary privies must be flyproof and water tight. Note the absence of back doors.such cases regular scavenger serviceshould be employed, and sufficient uniformityrequired so that a standardinterchangeable set of cans owned bythe city can be used. The essential feature of this formof sanitary privy for cities is that, insteadof depositing the fecal matterin a fly-proof pit under the privy, asin the case of rural privies, it is depositedin cans inside the seat box andremoved at regular intervals. Theseat box should be made fly-tight. ItWhen back doors are used, they arenearly always left open, or they becomebroken or are knocked off altogether.Without back doors, priviescan be placed close up against backfences or against other buildings, and, furthermore, the scavenger can not removethe can while the privy is in use. Some towns require a special boxform of ventilator at one end of theseat, extending up through the roof, and a screened opening at the other, but these are a little more expensive
