THE HEALTH BULLETIN. 225WHO'S YOUR REGISTRAR?Where and How to Register Births and DeathsNow that the new State law requiresthat every birth and death be registered,a great many people want toknow where to have such matters recorded,and how.It is all very simple. There is oneperson, known as the Local Registrar,appointed in each incorporated townby the mayor, and in each township inthe county by the chairman of theBoard of county Commissioners. Thislocal registrar is supplied with allblank forms for recording births anddeaths, and reports all such recordseach month to the State Registrar atRaleigh.In the case of a birth the doctor ormidwife who attends the birth reportsthe facts to the local registrar, anda birth certificate is made out givingthe date of birth, sex of the child, andother statistical particulars regardingthe names and address of the parents,and so on. Where there is no doctoror midwife in attendance, the parentsare required to attend to this matter.In the case of a death the doctorfills out the medical cause of death onthe death certificatefurnished by theundertaker, and the undertaker securesthe other statistical items, suchas age, date of birth, occupation, andso on, from any one competent to furnishsuch information. Where thereis no undertaker, the person who sellsthe casket at retail is required to placea blank death certificate and a printedinstruction sheet (both of which arefurnished by the State Board ofHealth) in each casket. Then the personacting as undertaker is requiredto fill out and file the death certificatewith the local registrar.The local registrar therefore becomesa very important personage inevery town and township. For thisreason we give below a complete listof all local registrars in the State. Besure to look up your own local registrar,in order to get in touch with himin case of a birth or death in theneighborhood.
