ing to left tackle. Junior Perry McDonnell and sophomore
Leland King were both among the team’s top
reserves on the offensive line last year.
Senior Chris Mott is a third-year varsity player.
Sophomores Vinnie Diana, Rich Mallon, and Jack
Scott are all up from the junior varsity team.
At center, senior Ben Garvey and junior Mark
Rodovick both lettered as reserves last fall. Junior
Mike Boch, another returning Bomber, will also be
in the mix.
RUNNING BACKS: The Bombers raised their
rushing yards nearly 37 yards per game over the 2006
season and posted the program’s third-best total in
Mike Welch’s 14 years as head coach.
The roster features six returning letter-winners,
headed by two-time award winner Danny Witbeck.
The junior has played in 17 games the past two years
and caught four passes last fall.
Sophomore Lance Baumgartner lettered as a
rookie fullback in 2007. Junior Joe Nicoletti moves
to that position after lettering as an inside linebacker
last season. Sophomore Charlie Calovich is up from
the junior varsity program.
Donovan and Baez combined for 6,271 yards
and 60 touchdowns in their careers; they rank first
and fourth, respectively, on the program’s all-time
rushing list. Ithaca’s returning ball carriers have
gained just 218 career yards. Junior Thomas Bergerstock
ran for 99 yards – the most by any returning
player – last year as the team’s third-string running
back. He and sophomore Dan Ruggerio both lettered.
ITHACA PER-GAME DEFENSIVE AVERAGES
REGULAR-SEASON
ITHACA COLLEGE
Senior Justin Kulp is back after missing the
2007 season with an injury; as a sophomore he was
Ithaca’s second-leading scorer —his eight rushing
touchdowns came on just 83 carries. Kulp, who
gained 103 yards on the ground, also scored a TD on
his only reception of the season.
Sophomore Matt Crandall, a junior varsity
standout last year, will also push for playing time.
THE DEFENSE: Ithaca brings back 18 letterwinners;
six starters return, along with two other
players who have seen starting duty. Last year’s unit
was especially strong against the run; for the fifth
time in eight years, the Bombers held their opponents
under 100 yards per game.
DEFENSIVE LINE: Bombers with starting
experience return at all three spots. A total of six
letter-winners are back on the defensive line.
At the end spot, Drescher and fellow junior Joe
Goetz head the list of veterans. They’ve started 30
games over the past two years; both started every
game last fall while combining for 108 tackles, 32
tackles for loss and six sacks.
Senior John Cirba (four tackles while playing
all but one game) and junior Scott Auchenbach
(three tackles for loss in just four appearances) both
lettered in 2007. Senior Doug Fraser and sophomore
Jason Zweig are also candidates for playing time.
At nose guard, Scharles enters his junior season
with a pair of letters. He started three games last year
and finished with nine tackles. Sophomore Andrew
Haim (who lettered as a rookie Bomber) and junior
Avi Deixler both return to the varsity as well.
