At a special ceremony
held in 1998, the press
box at Butterfield Stadium
was renamed the Dick
Lyon Press Box in honor of
the former Bomber coach. The
ceremony, which was part of
Ithaca’s Homecoming Weekend
festivities, also coincided
with the 40th anniversary of
the first football game played
at the facility (formerly known
as South Hill Field).
A group of coach Lyon’s
former players spearheaded a
fund-raising drive that enabled
the school to make improvements to the press box,
which includes private coaching booths for both
teams and broadcast facilities for up to four radio stations.

One of his team’s early conditioning drills was to
walk the length of the field picking up rocks on the
new playing surface. Now known as Butterfield Stadium,
the facility (including the Dick Lyon Press
