GAME 5 September 29
ITHACA 34, Brockport 14
Brockport (2-2) 0 7 0 7 — 14
Ithaca (3-2) 7 6 7 14 — 34
ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior Kyle Crandall scored a pair of
fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 3:04 span – on a 83-yard
kickoff return and a school-record 88-yard reception – as the
Bombers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 34-14 win
over the Brockport Golden Eagles.
Crandall caught an 88-yard touchdown pass from junior
quarterback Dan Juvan on the first play of the fourth quarter as
the Bombers took a 27-7 lead. After the Golden Eagles closed
to 27-14 with a 61-yard touchdown drive, Crandall ran the
kickoff back 83 yards for his first career return score.
Juvan threw for 227 yards and matched a career-high with
three touchdown passes. He threw a 22-yard pass to senior
fullback Dan Ross and a 28-yard pass to junior tight end
Brian Weverbergh.
Senior Jamie Donovan ran for a game-high 141 yards as
the Bombers outrushed Brockport 189-52. Donovan, who
has run for 462 yards in four games against Brockport, raised
his career totals to 3,227 yards on 608 carries; he broke Jeff
Wittman’s career record for rushing attempts and now stands
184 yards away from breaking his Bomber rushing record.
Ross scored the game’s first touchdown, rushing for a oneyard
score on the final play of the first quarter.
The Bomber defense – playing without two injured starters
– held Brockport to 52 rushing yards on 33 carries. The
Golden Eagles entered the game averaging 217 yards per
game on the ground. Junior linebacker John Scanlon and
sophomore defensive end Adam Drescher led Ithaca with
nine tackles apiece. Scanlon matched a career-high with three
tackles for loss. Drescher, who was in on two tackles for
loss, blocked a Brockport field goal attempt. He has blocked
five kicks this year (he had blocked an extra-point attempt in
each of Ithaca’s first four games), two short of the Bomber
single-season record.
Senior cornerback Scott Lieber and senior free safety
Charlie Stephens each made seven tackles for Ithaca. Senior
linebacker Mike Nowak added five tackles, a sack, and his
third fumble recovery of the year.
ITHACA COLLEGE
GAME 6 October 6
ITHACA 35, Norwich 0
Norwich (2-4, 0-2) 0 0 0 0 — 0
Ithaca (4-2, 1-2) 14 7 7 7 — 35
ITHACA, N.Y. —Senior Jamie Donovan ran for 193
yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bombers to a 35-0
Homecoming win over Norwich. Donovan became Ithaca’s
career rushing leader, raising his total to 3,413 yards, as the
Bombers celebrated Homecoming with a win for the 24th
time in 26 years.
Donovan scored touchdowns on Ithaca’s first two drives
(he gained all 58 yards on Ithaca’s opening drive) and gained
122 yards in the first quarter. He capped his day with a oneyard
touchdown run late in the third quarter, one play after
his 31-yard run moved him past three-time all-American Jeff
Wittman (3,410 yards from 1989 to 1992).
Senior Alex Baez ran for 116 yards and a pair of scores as
well for Ithaca; the game marked the first time two Bombers
gained 100 yards since a 1998 win over St. Lawrence when
three Ithaca running backs went over the century mark.
The Bomber defense held Norwich to 57 rushing yards
on 31 carries. Sophomore linebacker Tyler Baker led Ithaca
with career-high totals of eight tackles and four tackles for
loss. Junior linebacker Matt Scalice added seven tackles,
with four for loss. He added a career-best two tackles for loss
and forced a fumble.
Scalice was named Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week,
with Donovan earning Offensive Player of the Week.
The shutout was Ithaca’s first since the 2005 season and
marked the ninth time since 1982 that the Bombers had blanked
their Homecoming opponent.
The Cadets had two possessions inside the Bomber 10-yard
line. In the first quarter Ithaca senior free safety Charlie
Stephens picked off a Norwich pass in the end zone. Norwich
had a first-and-goal from the Bomber one in the third quarter
but lost two yards on four plays. Following that Norwich
possession, Ithaca drove 98 yards on a drive that featured
Donovan’s record-breaking run.
