ICMP: Header<br />

● ICMP transmits error and control messages on the network level. These<br />

messages are sent in an IP packet<br />

● Type/code indicates the type (and format) of the message, e.g.:<br />

Type Meaning<br />

0 Destination unreachable (packet cannot be sent)<br />

3 Echo request/reply (status request, e.g. for ping)<br />

4 Source Quench (Choke packet, data rate reduction)<br />

11 Time exceeded for datagram (TTL = 0, the packet is discarded)<br />

12 Parameter problem on datagram (A header field is set wrongly)<br />

15/16 Information Request/Reply<br />

30 Trace route (Trace the network path)<br />
