Finkel (Executive Director)New York University School of Medicine, New York, USAThe International Psychogeriatric Association is a worldwide, multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals dedicated tothe advancement of mental health in the elderly and the field ofpsychogeriatrics. The organization was proposed by Imre Fejer and HansReichenfeld in 1980, following a very popular course inpsychogeriatrics that had been developed by Professor TomArie in Nottingham, UK. The organization’s founding meetingwas held in Cairo, Egypt, in November 1982. Subsequently, IPAcongresses have been held every 2 years. Early congresses wereheld in Umea˚ , Sweden (1985), Chicago, USA (1987), Tokyo,Japan (1989) and Rome, Italy (1991). The organization hasmaintained these widely geographically dispersed settings for itscongresses until the present time (Table 142.1). In its early years, the growth of the organization was shepherded by ManfredBergener (Cologne, Germany), President and Sanford Finkel(Chicago, USA), Secretary–Treasurer. A measure of the influencethat Sanford Finkel has had on the organization includes hisunique role in having served as IPA President (Table 142.2), aswell as Secretary–Treasurer and chair of many important IPAcommittees and task forces. From the outset, IPA has been successful in contributing tomajor developments in the field of psychogeriatrics. Theorganization has done this in large part through its very successfulconferences. IPA’s Board of Directors has also contributed verysignificantly. Currently, there are 25 directors and five officersfrom around the world serving on IPA’s Board. From the verybeginning, the Board decided that no more than two directors canrepresent any single country. Consequently, IPA’s Board is adisparate and geographically diverse group. Many of the outstandingscientific and medical leaders in our field have served onIPA’s board. Examples include Sir Martin Roth (UK), LuigiAmaducci (Italy) and Kazuo Hasegawa (Japan). IPA has also, from the outset, had regularly scheduled regional meetings atintervals of approximately 6 months. These meetings have alsobeen held in diverse locations around the world (Table 142.1). Agreat advantage of these meetings is that, unlike the IPAcongresses, they are generally held in conjunction with a localorganization with a neuropsychogeriatric interest. This hasenabled IPA to have fertile interchanges with many localprofessional groups. These include joint meetings with ongoinglocal or regional groups, such as the Turkish Society ofPsychogeriatrics, the Institute of Mental Health of BeijingMedical University, the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Facultyof Old Age and the Brazilian Association of Geriatric Neuropsychiatry.Table 142.1November 22–25, 1982October 18–20, 1984August 28–31, 1985September 5–6, 1986March 26–28, 1987August 23–31, 1987April 28–29, 1988August 25–27, 1988May 18–19, 1989September 5–8, 1989September 21–22, 1990April 2–5, 1991August 18–23, 1991February 15–17, 1992October 29–30, 1992April 16–18, 1993September 5–10, 1993June 5–8, 1994February 17–20, 1995October 29–Nov 3, 1995March 9–10, 1996October 4–5, 1996April 25–27, 1997August 17–22, 1997May 21–23, 1998September 13–18, 1998April 12–14, 1999August 15–20, 1999April 4–7, 2000October 13–15, 2000IPA congress and meeting dates and locationsTable 142.21st Congress; Cairo, EgyptCologne, Germany2nd Congress; Umeå, SwedenParis, FranceBaden/Vienna, Austria3rd Congress; Chicago, USALausanne, SwitzerlandBudapest, HungaryModena, Italy4th Congress; Tokyo, JapanGothenburg, SwedenCambridge, UK5th Congress; Rome, ItalySan Francisco, USALille, FranceToronto, Canada6th Congress; Berlin, GermanyAmsterdam, The NetherlandsCancun, Mexico7th Congress; Sydney, AustraliaNew Delhi, IndiaReykjavik, IcelandSa˜ o Paulo, Brazil8th Congress; Jerusalem, IsraelIstanbul, TurkeyMunich, GermanyBeijing, China9th Congress; Vancouver, CanadaNewcastle upon Tyne, UKPoˆ rto Alegre, BrazilIPA PresidentsM.
