Precinct 4: West Devonport, Coles Beach,Don Reserve - north of Steele St.Description.All land area south of Bass Strait, West of Percy Street and Lovett Street, North ofthe Bass Highway and East of the Don River, Don Road/ Bass Highwayintersection and Jiloa Way.Arbour Zones 3, 9, 8, and 15. (for internal use only)The Don Reserve and Coles Beach are significant features of this area andneed to be retained and protected for both their cultural and their heritagesignificance. The land in this precinct is quite hilly and provides several vantagepoints which over-look the City and surrounding areas. It contains one of ourmost popular beaches, Coles Beach, and contains some of the mostenvironmentally significant vegetation within the municipality and the region.Significant trees in the Don Reserve include Eucalyptus ovata – Swamp Gumand Eucalyptus viminalis – Manna Gum. The Don Road commercial/ lightindustrial precinct is also located within the precinct.PART D: PRECINCT CHARACTER PROFILES & OBJECTIVES 26
Key Assets/ Special Features.• Indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses predominantly along the foreshore,Don River and in small quantities in other areas.• Significant trees planted on the original farm lots, prior to subdivision,now provide a good visual amenity and should be protected.• Several cultural, heritage and environmental features.• Some of Devonport’s’ main sporting facilities including the DevonportSoccer Club, and Devonport Aquatic Centre.• Quality sweeping views.• Devonport Cemetery.• Regional coastal and river walking trail.• Safe beach for swimming.• Quality “Bush” parks.• Coles Beach Foreshore.• Government Housing.Key Concerns.• Several, small pockets, of unusable open space.• Environmental weeds in parks and streets.• Lack of:• Protection of remnant native vegetation;• Preservation and acknowledgement of historical andenvironmentally significant elements in the landscape;• Quality street trees;• Toilet facilities.• Minimal playground equipment.• Minimal BBQ/ Picnic Facilities.• Erosion.• Minimal name and directional signage.Identified Heritage Areas:Reference should be made to the City Of Devonport, Devonport and EnvironsPlanning Scheme 1984.There are no identified heritage areas.PART D: PRECINCT CHARACTER PROFILES & OBJECTIVES 27
