Forward.Parks, reserves and other public open spaces are integral to healthy and vibrantcommunities. They help define the character of an area, provide opportunitiesfor recreation, an escape from the demands of day to day life and protectsignificant natural and cultural features. It is therefore essential that <strong>Council</strong>consider and provide these areas in the future planning of the <strong>City</strong>.In 2003 <strong>Devonport</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> adopted the <strong>Devonport</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> RecreationStrategy Plan 2003-2013. This strategy provides a broad framework for thedevelopment of a diverse range of networked open spaces that meet thevarying needs of the community.The document sets out clear processes for the planning and design of new andexisting open space in accordance with best practice; and contributes toachieving the Strategic Plan 2004 commitment to “facilitate communitydevelopment and ensure the delivery of programs and services to meetcommunity needs.”This is an exciting document, which aims to provide vibrant, people-friendly andinviting public open spaces for <strong>Devonport</strong>.
