Promotion.• Active promotion to potential visitors of play spaces is encouraged to informboth residents and visitors of the facilities available within the municipality.• Play spaces should be promoted in conjunction with <strong>Council</strong>’s Family Policyand ‘Building Families’ marketing initiatives to entice families to be activewithin the community.Risk management.• Design play spaces in accordance with risk management best practices.• <strong>Space</strong>s should meet the relevant service level standards detailed in<strong>Devonport</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Space</strong> Standards & Technical Notes.• A review of play space standards and <strong>Council</strong>’s inspection, maintenanceand reporting procedures should be undertaken annually.• Ensure relevant staff has access to regular training specific to play spacemanagement, to ensure up to date knowledge and skills.Community participation, partnership, and consultation.• When <strong>Council</strong> proposes to develop a new or redevelop an existing playspace, consultation techniques should include:• Letterbox drop to surrounding residences/property owners;• On site meetings with parents and children to discuss developmentproposals and design;• Advising residents of proposals through primary schools and communityorganisations.• Children and the community as a whole should be encouraged to beinvolved in the design of play space features.• Community groups that have an interest in a specific play space, such asadjacent school or recreation facility, should be consulted as part of theplay spaces development.• Community partnership opportunities should be explored for jointdevelopment and maintenance of play spaces.Equipment removal.• Removing equipment from playgrounds is to be conducted as per the<strong>Devonport</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Space</strong> Standards & Technical Notes –Removal of Assets.• Equipment that is removed for safety reasons should not be replaced until acommunity needs analysis is undertaken to determine suitability.• When equipment is deemed unsafe, the following factors should guide<strong>Council</strong>’s approach to repair or replacement:• Cost of repairs; and• Age of equipment.For new Subdivisions.• The following criteria are additional items used as a guide by bothdevelopers and <strong>Council</strong> staff when considering play spaces within publicopen spaces in new residential areas• Minimum land size is to be as per Part B: <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Space</strong>Classification System;• Siting of the play space should have, as a minimum, frontage to a roadon one side;PART C: ACHIEVING THE VISION: PRINCIPLES, GUIDELINES & STANDARDS PAGE 20
