GENERAL CRIME SITUATIONCHAPTER 2CRIME SITUATION IN 20042.1 There were 81 315 crimes reported to the Police in 2004, a decreaseof 8.0% compared with 88 377 recorded in 2003. The crime rate, which isdefined as the number of reported crimes per 100 000 population, was 1 181.5, adrop of 9.1% compared with 1 299.1 in 2003. The overall crime detection ratein 2004 was 43.6%, compared with 39.2% in 2003.2.2 A chart showing the figures of reported cases, crime rates anddetection rates of overall crime from 1995 to 2004 is at Appendix IV.VIOLENT CRIME2.3 The total number of violent crimes (which include homicide, rape,indecent assault, wounding, serious assault, robbery, kidnapping, blackmail,criminal intimidation, and arson) recorded in 2004 was 13 890, a decrease of4.5% compared with 14 542 in 2003. The drop in violent crime was mainlyascribed to decreases in robbery, wounding, and blackmail. The violent crimerate per 100 000 population was 201.8, a drop of 5.6% compared with 213.8 in2003. The violent crime detection rate in 2004 was 57.4%, compared with52.4% in 2003.2.4 A chart showing the figures of reported cases, crime rates anddetection rates of violent crime from 1995 to 2004 is at Appendix V.ANALYSES OF SELECTED CRIMESRobbery2.5 There were 2 237 robberies recorded in 2004, a drop of 30.4%compared with 3 215 in 2003 (see chart at Appendix VI).2.6 There were 3 robberies involving the use of genuine firearms in2004, while there was no such case in 2003. There were 7 cases of robberywith stun guns and 47 cases of robbery with pistol-like objects, compared with 4and 44 in 2003 respectively (see chart at Appendix VII).93
