SIDE-STEP - OFFLOAD - SETUP30m20mSET-UP DIAGRAMSCORING ZONESCORING ZONESET-UP DIAGRAMActivity Fending scragObjective Developing an effective fend as the final step in evasion in a game-specificenvironment. Note that the sequence for an attacker is first a step/change indirection and acceleration followed by a strong fend where the attacker hasthe aim to push himself/herself away from the defender.Key Factors1. Evade defender and accelerate as head-on tackle needs to be avoided.2. Shift the ball away from the defender to free the hand nearest the defender.3. Aim for the defender’s shoulder with a mindset of pushing away from the defender.4. Offload option if attacker dominates contact but fend is unsuccessful. 5. The fend isfollowed by an acceleration with the ball transmitted back to both hands if needed.Equipment RequirementsBalls 1 Bags n/a Area 30m x 20mCones 1 stack Suits n/a Players 12Shields n/a Bibs 6 Time 10-15minsPractice Description Play 6 on 6 scrag where the attacking team need to return to their tryline if they get wrapped up with the ball. Defenders can’t get closer than 10m to theattacking try line. Rucks can beadded although the focus remains on evasion followed by a strong fend.Regress by decreasing number of defenders.Activity Offload breakout practiceObjective To develop evasion and offloading skills under pressure.Key Factors1. Attack the space on either side of the defender using evasive footwork or running hardon to the ball.2. Win the space behind the defender by either using a strong fend ordynamic leg drive through impact.3. Strong grip on the ball to make a successful pass to a support runner with aclose pop-up pass to the chest area.4. Support wait for ball carrier to win collision and run a close support line.Equipment RequirementsBalls 1 per group Bags n/a Area 10m x 5m spaceCones 1 stack Suits n/a Players 3 per groupShields n/a Bibs n/a Time 10-15minsPractice DescriptionPlayers can simply find a space as cones are not essential.Working in groups of three, the ball carrier looks to beat the defender through evasivefootwork. The ball carrier then offloads to the communicating support player. This is then repeated with the three players taking on a different role each time(attacker, defender or support).Practice Progression / RegressionsProgress by adding additional defenders and attackers.Regress by focussing on 1v1 evasion skills to encourage ball carriers to beat the defenders.92
