D E N K U L T U R E L L E S K U L E S E K K E Ncalls for a clarification in concern to what constitutes the activity of teaching.Teaching can take place outside of a formal educational institution, and willtake place within it. The context is the factor that changes. Teaching mightnot be a professional activity in all situations, but if education is a profession, then the teaching activity performed by professionals of education, isprofessional activity. In this sense, A&C teachers are professionals. There are several avenues to becoming an A&C teacher. It is possible tobecome a Classroom teacher (Allmennlærar), a Specialised Art and Craftsteacher, or an artist with Practical Pedagogical Training (PraktiskPedagogisk Utdanning). Common to them all is that they require ‘formalcompetence’ and consist of required courses in pedagogy, practice in schoolsand didaktik as well as subject knowledge. The formal titles Teacher, Adjunktor Lektor cannot be bestowed without formal competence. Those working inthe schools without formal competence are labelled “un-schooled”(ufaglærte).A Classroom teacher attends a 4 years course qualifying to teach all subjectsfrom 1 st to 10 th grade — attaining the title Adjunkt. There is a core consistingof basic training in the main school subjects, pedagogy, practice training withdidaktik and then further training in chosen subjects. The Classroom teacherstudents can choose to study no A&C at all, take 15stp, 30stp or 60stp. 153 Inreality teachers can become qualified to teach the subject with no formaltraining whatsoever. However, statistics into the competency of teachers ingeneral education shows that Classroom teachers with limited or no formaltraining in A&C teach very few classes each. However, the Classroomteachers cover a lot of A&C classes, as their numbers are great (Lagerstrøm2007).To become a Specialised A&C teacher, a bachelor degree in Art and designeducation — attaining the degree Teacher, or a master degree — attaining thedegree Lektor are offered. These courses qualify to teach from 1 st grade to10 th grade, as well as at high school level. To become a Specialised A&Cteacher with an Education from the Visual art is also possible. A formalbachelor or master degree in art, can be complemented by a 60stp universitylevel course of Practical Pedagogical Training (PPU). This course containspedagogy, didaktik and practice in schools. Artists attaining this formaldegree of Teacher or Lektor, however, run the risk of no longer qualifying forthe status or support as an artist (Aslaksen 1997). It is possible for teacherswithout any A&C training to teach if there is a need in the school. Thismainly concerns the primary school level — 1 st to 4 th grade. Most specialised153 60 stp equals a year of studies, 30 stp a semester, and 15 half a semester. Stp = ESCT140
