ACTA TECHNICA CORVINIENSIS – BULLETIN of ENGINEERINGNEXT STEPS TO ENSURE EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT[3] GIURESCU C.C. 1075. History of forests inRomania fron the old times till today. Ed.Ceres. Bucuresti.OF THE “EUROPEAN YELLOWSTONE” – THELARGEST PROTECTED AREA [4] GIURGIU V. et al. Pristine forests of Romania. Ed.ASBL Foret Wallonne, Louvrin-le-Neuve. Belgia.Despite the unfavourable policy environmentand serious lack o resources for maintaining thewilderness areas in Romania, there are variousprojects that try to find solutions by looking tovalues and benefits for key stakeholders or evensetting up partnerships to promote and useprotected areas for the benefit of people andlocal communities. One of the successful initiatives is thecertification of the Retezat National Park in thePAN Parks system and the establishment of alocal tourism association that will promote theRetezat wilderness on the European ecotourismmarket. The model is there, it needs support tosurvive and to be extended to neighbouringareas. There are also active conservation organizationsthat are supporting protected areas and theecotourism concept as well as conservation ofHigh Conservation Value Forests, thuscontributing to the efficient management ofprotected areas, like WWF Danube CarpathianProgramme, the Association of Ecotourism fromRomania and many other NGOs from the NGOCoalition Natura2000 Romania. But these are only small contributions to thehuge task of providing a framework and enoughresources for the European Yellowstone tobecome a viable and efficient protected areacomplex. Political will is key for such a bigendeavour and to obtain it WWF needs thepartnership and support of many otherorganizations and institutions. A strategy will bedeveloped to plan the steps for such anambitious campaign and hopefully others willjoin our efforts to maintain the values ofEurope’s largest protected area.REFERENCES[1] BIRIS I.A., RADU S., COANDA CORINA 2002.
