MONICA DOBRAAN EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS ABOUTTHE FRACTURE OF THE WHEELSET-AXLESOF THE 5100 KW ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVEAbstract:The paper is focused on some experimental analysis performed in the Testing Materials Laboratorybelonging to I.C.M. Resita regarding the appearance of cracks in the wheelset-axles of the 5100 kWelectric locomotives. Chemical, traction, bending dynamic and torsion tests are performed fordifferent wheelset-axles, different rolling distances and different working conditions which for the“stick-slip” phenomenon occurred. Keywords:locomotive, wheelset-axles, mechanical test, crack, stick-slipINTRODUCTIONThe proper against skating device of the C.F.R.5100 kW electric locomotives is not veryefficient when a high level difference has to beraised. As an example, when a heavy train istrailed on an important level difference (as it isthe Brasov – Predeal railway route), someimportant oscillations of the wheelset-axlesappeared. The main reason is that for difficulttraction conditions, the adherence limit isexceeded. The driving torque on the wheels isdivided into non-equal parts, so the “stick-slip”phenomenon of the wheelset-axles is present, which mean an alternate torsion and slip state.Because of the elastic assembling of the wheelson the axles, the whole ensemble will oscillatewith a proper frequency. When the phenomenon takes place in theframework of the micro-sliding domain [1],[2]which means in the framework of a perfectadherence, the oscillation are of a highamplitude. The possible consequences is theappearance of a high state of stress in thewheelset-axles. But the final and the mostdangerous consequence is represented by thefracture of the wheelset-axles ensemble [3]. Thisis the reason why the analysis of the wheel setaxlesbecame obviously necessary [4]. It meansboth a mechanical, chemical analysis and anexperimental non-destructive analysis, in orderto detect possible crack initiating locations in thevolume of the wheelset-axles.LABORATORY EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSISDuring the time and according to railwayadministration regulations, the experimentalanalysis often avoids the appearance of the© copyright FACULTY of ENGINEERING – HUNEDOARA, ROMANIA 37
