Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

The development challenge: Focus <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Millennium Development Goals<br />

With <strong>on</strong>ly four years left until <strong>the</strong> 2015 deadline to<br />

achieve <strong>the</strong> Millennium Development Goals (MDG),<br />

it is critical to renew efforts to address <strong>the</strong> needs of <strong>the</strong><br />

world’s poorest people. The MDGs are broad in scope<br />

and range from halving extreme poverty to halting <strong>the</strong><br />

spread of HIV/AIDS to providing universal primary<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>. The MDGs deserve serious and unwavering<br />

attenti<strong>on</strong> from all development stakeholders, including<br />

government, business and civil society, as part of an<br />

<strong>on</strong>going commitment to rid <strong>the</strong> world of poverty.<br />

Although many countries have made progress against<br />

<strong>the</strong> MDGs in <strong>the</strong> last 10 years, <strong>the</strong> development<br />

challenge c<strong>on</strong>tinues to loom large, not least due to <strong>the</strong><br />

setbacks suffered as a result of <strong>the</strong> financial crisis –<br />

a downturn of such proporti<strong>on</strong>s that it is estimated to<br />

have left 64 milli<strong>on</strong> more people in poverty in 2010 than<br />

previously anticipated. 9 At a United Nati<strong>on</strong>s summit<br />

held in September 2010, <strong>the</strong> attenti<strong>on</strong> of world leaders<br />

was <strong>on</strong>ce again focused <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> MDGs and particularly<br />

<strong>the</strong> need to accelerate progress in <strong>the</strong> least developed<br />

countries, where more than 400 milli<strong>on</strong> people live<br />

below <strong>the</strong> poverty line.<br />

Government leadership will be crucial. But more than ever before, we depend <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

resources and capacities of <strong>the</strong> private sector to make things happen. Business is a<br />

primary driver of innovati<strong>on</strong>, investment and job creati<strong>on</strong>. There is no l<strong>on</strong>ger any doubt<br />

that business plays an integral role in delivering ec<strong>on</strong>omic and social progress.<br />
