communities to engage companies effectively, and<br />

Take resp<strong>on</strong>sibility for <strong>the</strong>ir ec<strong>on</strong>omic, political and<br />

social impacts <strong>on</strong> poverty across <strong>the</strong>ir value chains and<br />

spheres of influence<br />

Avoid negative impacts, including <strong>the</strong> infringement of<br />

human rights, with a particular focus <strong>on</strong> women and<br />

vulnerable communities<br />

Assess and report <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir impacts in a transparent<br />

and participatory manner<br />

Build participatory and accountable processes with<br />

stakeholders throughout <strong>the</strong>ir operati<strong>on</strong>s and value chains<br />

Where appropriate, and transparently, use <strong>the</strong>ir full range<br />

of influence to promote best practices and pro-poor policies<br />

with government and industry<br />

Seek opportunities to bring local suppliers into <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

value chains, empower women and innovate new<br />

products, services and ways of doing business to address<br />

development challenges.<br />
