North Walsham Conservation Area Character Appraisal and Management PlanFigure 48 : Coursed and uncoursed flint usedwith brick, Bank Loke car park.Figure 49 : 3 Market Place. A refrontedhouse where the roof pitch has beenchanged. There are few examples of flint being used for wall construction in North Walsham. Brickand cobble walls are found as part of houses at 43-5 Market Place and on the north-eastcorner of Aylsham Road. One of the Paston School buildings facing Bank Loke car park hascoursed cobbles at the beginning of the wall, with uncoursed cobbles above. The cobblesare combined with bricks placed end on to help tie the inner and outer layers of the walltogether. At the north west end of Mitre Tavern yard is what may be the small area of an oldbrick and flint wall incorporated into a later building. This example is of particular interest,as it also has galleting, or small flakes of flint, placed into the mortar. It is difficult to date such walls, as brick and cobble construction seems to have changedlittle from the 17th to the mid 19th centuries. Some brick and flint walls may show how partsof earlier houses integrated into later structures, or that some of the Georgian or Regencyhouses with “classical” fronts were, at least in part, constructed of brick and cobbles. It ishard to tell what lies beneath most rendered fronts.North Norfolk District Council53
