The shapeof the vernacular house had been dictated primarily by practical considerations, for instance,the type of building materials used. Georgian and Regency fashions dictated that housesshould, as far as possible, have a symmetrical arrangement of multiple-paned sash windows,preferably with a vertical emphasis. Roofs should be low pitched, (sometimes with a pediment)and that any decoration such as the doorcase should incorporate forms from the classicalworld. In some cases, houses were refronted, rather than completely rebuilt; White’s 1836Directory of <strong>Norfolk</strong> noted that in <strong>North</strong> Walsham “many of the old houses have been re-builtwith handsome fronts”.<strong>North</strong> <strong>Norfolk</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>Council</strong>55
