It isimportant to differentiate these cams from cams for use with the S&S HydraulicValve Train Update Kit, Retro Conversion Kit, or Replacement Cylinder Head Kit ForPans, which use 1984-’99 style cams. These cams are all high lift, with the exceptionof the 450S, and require high lift valve springs and clearance checks for installation.Parts forEvolution ®1984-1999Parts forSportster ® & Buell ®1986-2012Parts forVintage Engines1926-1984Parts forX-Wedge®2007-2012Parts forVictory®, Off-road& MetricRacingProductsFitment• 1948-’69 engines with generator style crankcases• 1970-’84 engines with alternator style crankcases• Early SH-Series engines with stock style valve trainApplications450S Cam: A bolt-in hydraulic cam for 74" and 80" shovelhead engines 1966-’79and 1983-’84. (Can be used in 1981-’82 models if cylinder heads are updatedto late style valve guides.) The 450S can also be used as a low end torque camin modified shovelhead engines up to 88" with compression ratios of up to 8.5:1.Although designed for use with hydraulic tappets, the S&S 450S can be used withsolid lifters. Use with solids will result in more valve train noise, slightly highercylinder pressure, and slightly more torque. 1500-4500 rpm. (see dyno chart)514 Cam: For 84" to 93" strokers with no greater than 9:1 CR – best gains occurin the mid range from 2500 to 5000 rpm where most riding is done. Relativelyquiet and easier on the valve train than most other cams with lifts as high. Solidlifters or aftermarket hydraulic tappets are recommended, valve spring spacing andother normal clearancing checks required. 2500-5000 rpm.560S Cam : For 88" to 103" engines between 9:1 to 10:1 CR – Excellent poweracross the rpm range. Not recommended for stock displacement or lowercompression engines. Requires high lift valve springs and normal clearance checks.Solid lifters only. 3500-6000 rpm.565S Cam: The 565S cam for big inch, high compression shovelhead engines isjust the ticket for big, bad engines like our 98" and 103" Sidewinder® Kits (see dynochart on next page). 10:1 to 12:1 compression required. The long duration of thiscam makes good top end horsepower. Solid lifters only. 3500-6500 rpm.Cam Specifications For 1948-’84 big twin engines33-5195The 450S is a great bolt-in street cam for 74" and 80" shovelhead engines. This dyno chart comparesthe S&S 450S to one of the all time favorites, the Andrews® A grind cam in an 80" shovelhead.Note that the maximum horsepower is almost identical, but the S&S 450S yields about 5 ft/lb moremidrange torque.Tools & ShopSuppliesDealer Services& Promo ItemsWarranty &Company PolicyOEM Cross ReferenceAppendix & Index5-4CamNameS&S450SS&S514S&S560SS&S565SApplicationEngines up to 88"with up to 8.5:1 CR.Good low and midrange torque.80" to 96"engines with 8:1to 9:1 CR.Good mid range.88" to 103"engines w/9:1 to10.1:1 CR. Pan ratio is nominally 1.5:1 and shovel ratio is nominally 1.43:1. S&S rocker arms for shovels have 1.5:1 rocker arm ratio, so lift will be the same as pan lift.3TDC lifts are measured at the valve and are for reference only. Overlap valve lifts must be checked on assembled motor.4Cams specified for solid tappets may be used with modern high performance hydraulic tappets for shovelhead engines. Stock hydraulic tappets are not recommended. 1980-'81 engines require conversion to late style valve guidesSolid
