TIFFIN MOTORHOMES –ALLEGRO RED® Chapter 7 ELECTRICAL FEATURESBattery Inspection and CareThe 12-VDC electrical-power system consists of four 6-VDC batteries wired in a series-parallel combination toprovide a final 12 VDC system (Figure 7-5) providing up to 450 Ampere-hours (A-hr) of service. As the batteries contain a significant amount of electrical energy, they must be handled with due diligence andcare. Some of the routine precautions include:CautionDisconnect the 120 VAC electrical power cord and the negative terminal from thecoach batteries BEFORE working on the Allegro RED electrical systemWarningRemove rings, metal watchbands, and any other metal jewelry before workingaround batteries. If any metallic object (tool, jewelry, etc.) contacts the positivebattery terminal or any connection made to that terminal AND also contacts thenegative terminal or any of its connections, a SEVERE ELECTRICAL SHORT willoccur which could result in an explosion, fire, and/or personal injury. Lead-acidbatteries contain diluted sulfuric acid which can be dangerous; avoid direct contactwith any battery fluids. Wear eye protection.CautionIf the Allegro RED ever requires any welding operations on the frame, first disconnect the chassis batteries. Failure to do so will destroy allof the chassis computer system. When batteries are not used for extended periods of time, they will gradually lose their electrical charge. Therefore, itis necessary periodically to recharge the batteries to increase the operational lives of the batteries. It is also necessaryto check the external condition of the batteries on a regular basis. Look for cracks in the battery case and cover. Checkthe vent plugs and replace them if they are cracked or broken. Keep the battery clean.Since accumulations of dirt and acid residue around the battery terminals may provide an electrical path fordischarging the battery, the area around the terminals should be cleaned periodically. One can use an old toothbrushand a sparse amount of a diluted solution of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and water (distilled or de-ionized,preferred; tap water, acceptable) to clean and neutralize any acidic build-up around the battery terminals. If there is anyforming on the top of the battery, this indicates that acidic residues are being neutralized.7-4
