DAN – Your Dive Safety AssociationWith the encouragement of International DAN, both programs now sharethe same Information Technology (IT) platform that allows data to bemerged. Joining the efforts and data will accelerate the research and providemore power to our analysis. Dive computer manufacturers Cochran,Suunto, Uwatec / Scubapro, DiveRite and dive recorder manufacturerReefNet have strongly supported PDE. In 2004, two new dive computermanufacturers joined the project – both Oceanic and the VR-3 dive computersare now compatible with PDE.Cochran, DiveRite and Uwatec have dive log software that allows diversto email their PDE data directly to DAN. Suunto and ReefNet are workingon this capability within their software. Volunteer Field Researc hCoordinators (FRCs) and Data Collection Centers (DCCs) are responsiblefor gathering PDE data. Student interns are often able to earn college credits for their summerwork. Non-student candidates, postgraduate students and periodsother than summer are also considered, if appropriate. Interns are trainedat DAN and placed with dive retailers or dive operations that believe inthe importance of research to improve dive safety and efficiency.In 1999 the first DAN Research Intern collected more than 900 PDE divesat Discovery Diving in Beaufort, N.C. DAN – Your Dive Safety AssociationIn 2003 DAN trained seven interns from the United States and placedthem in popular diving locations in the U.S., Caribbean and the SouthPacific. These interns collected 6,667 dives in three months. For the 2005summer program, DAN will plan on six to eight interns in various locationsaround the diving world. Also in 2005, DAN America will work withour international partners in South Africa to build an internship programin their areas. This will add to the ever-growing PDE database and beginto offer varied diving practices and environments.The RecreationalDive ProfessionalsStudy will collectand analyzethe exposure andoutcome data indive professionals.Many DAN Business Members have volunteered to be Host DivingFacility for the summer Interns. A host facility allows the intern access totheir divers, a space to work and helps DAN promote the PDE and internshipprogram. It is designed to learn more about the divingstyle and dive profiles of dive professionals. For purposes of the study, adive professional is defined as a recreational scuba diver who is currentlyworking professionally in the diving industry as a dive instructor, divemaster,dive guide, videographer or photographer.The RDP Project was initiated because of data collected in 2001 by threedive guides in Cozumel who were serving as PDE Field ResearchCoordinators. These data suggested that the DCS incidence among diveguides was high compared to other dive groups. The objective of the RDPis to determine if this preliminary observation was valid and, if so, whatthe cause might be. The RDP will include dive professionals from Mexico,the Cayman Islands and Fernando de Noronha, Brazil.For more information on this study, call DAN Research at 1-800-446-2671or +1-919-684-2948 ext. 627, or email duguccioni@dan.duke.eduDive Computer Recognition ProgramIn 2000, DAN began a program to recognize manufacturers who makedive computers that were compatible with Project Dive Exploration. Theprogram is open to all manufacturers that have implemented the DANDive Log-7 (DL7) standard in their dive log software. The DL7 standardwas developed to support Project Dive Exploration but is applicable inany other project that involves dive data collection.The purpose of the Dive Computer Recognition Program is to augmentparticipation in PDE by increasing awareness of all dive computer users.To date, the seven participating manufacturers (Cochran, DiveRite,10DAN’s <strong>Report</strong> on Decompression Illness, Diving Fatalities and Project Dive Exploration: 2005 Edition
