Section 2 - Project Dive Exploration (PDE)Figure 2.2-2Cumulativenumber of PDEdives collected(1995-2003)(n=80,439).Table 2.2-1 shows an example of the breakdown and subgroupingof dives by providers of data. The contribution of year-round datacollection centers established aboard the two Nekton Cruises boatsdoubled. They provided 49 percent of all PDE dives. The secondlargest contributors were DAN interns, who collected 24 percent ofall PDE dives in 2003, up 32 percent from the previous year. Theinterns were deployed in areas of special interest that were notwell represented in previous years. Data collection among recreationaldive professionals increased 87 percent. Among independentFRCs that submit a complete dive log directly to DAN via theinternet from their dive log application, data collection increased59 percent. This feature was available in Cochran and DiveRitecomputers and their dive log software in 2003. Recently, it hasbecome available in Uwatec computers. This should significantlyincrease the contribution of independent divers in the future.Table 2.2-1Providers andtheir contributionof PDE data.% Dives Collected % IncreaseSource 2002 2003 in 2003 2003 / 2002Liveaboard Collection Centers 6,593 13,046 49 98DAN Interns 4,878 6,449 24 32Scapa Flow, Scotland 2,795 2,476 9 -11Recreational Dive Professionals 1,283 2,396 9 87Independent FRCs 1,511 2,400 9 59Total 17,060 26,767 100 57Table 2.2-2 shows the four main subsets of dives.
