Section 2 - Project Dive Exploration (PDE)2.6 Dive PlanningTable 2.6-1 and Figure 2.6-1 illustrates the use of dive planningmethods. Most divers in our sample used dive computers to plantheir dives and determine the dive time and the ascent. In 2003,only 1 percent reported relying completely on others for theirdecompression planning. This is much less than in previous years.Divers reported relying on dive tables in only 2 percent of thedives.Interestingly, in the Beach and Day Boat subgroup, relying onanother person was highest in comparison to other subgroups(Table 2.6-1). The Beach and Day Boat subgroup varies most withinthe subgroups in terms of diver experience and probably thelevel of organization of the diving. Nearly 10 percent of recreationaldive professionals (dive guides) relied on dive tables.Table 2.6-1Dive planningmethod amongfour PDEsubgroups.SubgroupDive Plan Cold-Water RecreationalLiveaboard Beach and Wreck DiveDay Boat Diving ProfessionalsDive Computer 81.5 82.4 97.9 88.1Table 0.3 4.4 2.1 9.5Another Diver 0.2 1.8 0.0 0.0Not <strong>Report</strong>ed 18.0 11.5 0.0 2.4Figure 2.6-1Use of diveplanning anddecompressionplanning by dive.36DAN’s <strong>Report</strong> on Decompression Illness, Diving Fatalities and Project Dive Exploration: 2005 Edition
