Section 2 - Project Dive Exploration (PDE)Figure 2.6-2 shows the percentage of dives in the 2003 PDE datasetwith reported decompression or safety stops. A safety stop wasreported for 72 percent of all dives collected in 2003. This was anincrease compared with the five-year sample. Liveaboard diversreported the highest percentage (87 percent) of dives with a safetystop and the lowest percentage of dives with required decompressionstop (less than 1 percent) (Table 2.6-2). Divers at Scapa Flow(CWWD subgroup) reported that 37 percent of the dives requireddecompression stops. Some of them have used oxygen rich gasmix for decompression.Figure 2.6-2Decompressionprocedures.SubgroupDecompression Cold-Water RecreationalLiveaboard Beach and and Wreck DiveDay Boat Diving ProfessionalsSafety Stop 86.4 59.5 52.6 25.3In Water 0.7 5.9 36.5 2.8None 5.5 24.7 9.8 8.2Not <strong>Report</strong>ed 7.3 10.0 1.1 63.6Table 2.6-2Percent of diveswith decompressionor safety stop infour PDE subgroups.DAN’s <strong>Report</strong> on Decompression Illness, Diving Fatalities and Project Dive Exploration: 2005 Edition 37
