DAN – Your Dive Safety AssociationAfter reviewing the skills and knowledge development portions of theDEMP program, the students participate in an integrated scenario inwhich they can bring together all of the skills learned in each segment. Toparticipate in this program, students must be current cardiopulmonaryresuscitation (CPR) providers.Remote Emergency Medical Oxygen (REMO2)The DAN Remote Emergency Medical Oxygen (REMO2) system modulesupplements the DAN Oxygen First Aid in Scuba Diving Injuries course.Based on medical closed-circuit oxygen re b reather technology, theREMO2 device provides injured divers with high concentrations of emergencyoxygen for extended periods. This training course instructs theOxygen Provider in the use of the new DAN REMO2 system introducedin 2003.Basic Life Support for Dive Professionals (BLSPRO)The remote nature of dive accidents, whether a few hours from shore ordays from civilization, frequently requires more advanced levels of carethan are off e red by traditional or entry-level CPR programs. DANInstructors and Instructor Trainers will now be able to offer a healthcareprovider-level basic life support program for their students and divers.DAN Instructorsand InstructorTrainers will nowbe able to offer acomplete divingemergency program.Basic Life Support for Dive Professionals (BLSPRO) is ideal for dive professionalsand divers interested in understanding professional-level resuscitationtechniques. This program is designed to be applicable to the divingmarket, including scenes and scenarios from dive situations, as well asthe non-diving / healthcare market. DAN Instructors and InstructorTrainers will now be able to offer a complete diving emergency program.Coupled with DAN’s existing Training programs, DAN Instructors andInstructor Trainers will now be able to offer a complete dive emergencyprogram.On-Site Neurological Assessment for DiversApproximately two-thirds of divers with decompression illness have evidenceof damage to the nervous system. These signs are often vague andcan go unrecognized by the diver. This can cause them to be dismissed asinsignificant or not dive-related.The DAN On-Site Neurological Assessment for Divers Provider ("DANNeuro Provider") program refreshes the knowledge of the signs andsymptoms of a dive emergency, identify when it is appropriate to conductan on-site neurological assessment and train providers to conduct thatassessment.Diving Emergency Specialist (DES)DAN America has a new recognition program for trained divers calledDiving Emergency Specialist (DES). DAN – Your Dive Safety AssociationTo earn this provider recognition, divers must hold current certificationsin the following DAN Training courses (or their equivalents): OxygenFirst Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries; Advanced Oxygen First Aid for ScubaDiving Injuries; First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries; andAutomated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for Scuba Diving.Divers wanting the DES designation must also hold a rescue-level certificationor higher with a scuba training agency and current CPR and firstaid certifications.DAN TravelAssistprovides upto $100,000emergency medicalevacuationassistance for anyinjury or illnessincurred at least 50miles from home.The DES rating also includes an Instructor rating for DAN Instructors andan Instructor Trainer rating for DAN Trainers. These two levels requireholding DAN Instructor and/or Trainer credentials while demonstratingadditional support of the DAN Training mission by conducting a minimumnumber of DAN courses in each of the required DES components.DAN Online — www.DiversAlertNetwork.orgDAN’s website on the World Wide Web provides a wealth of informationon scuba health and safety issues, as well as demonstrating the many benefitsof DAN membership. This includes answers to frequently asked divemedical questions, oxygen course listings and the location of a DANBusiness Member near you. Members can order DAN products, sign upand renew online.In 2004, DAN Research, along with the Information Technology andCommunications departments, developed a new section of the website forresearch. The new section is separated into several different subtopics,including current projects; past projects with some results; news andevents about what Research is currently doing and where we will be in thefield; and downloads for individuals who want to participate in ourresearch projects, particularly Project Dive Exploration and Flying AfterDiving. Another useful feature of the new section is the searchable databaseof Research papers and abstracts. This annual report can be downloadedfree of charge from the DAN website by DAN Members.
