She was in a group of three divers whowere dropped off by a boat. Simultaneously,the dive boat was tending to several groups ofdivers in different areas. The current was verystr<strong>on</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the divers felt c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s were notsafe for making the dive. The dive boat pickedup the other two divers in the group, but thedecedent had disappeared below the surface,<strong>and</strong> her body was never recovered.03-16 Experienced divemaster with chr<strong>on</strong>iccardiac problems, signaled problems <strong>on</strong> thebottom <strong>and</strong> disappearedCause of Death: Unknown Cause of Death,Body Not RecoveredThis 58-year-old male was a very experienceddivemaster <strong>and</strong> a dive shop owner. He had amedical history significant for severe cor<strong>on</strong>arya t h e ro s c l e rosis, including a previous stentplacement. The decedent had been taking severalcardiac medicati<strong>on</strong>s, including nitroglycerin.After diving the previous day, he hadcomplained of shortness of breath. The diver<strong>and</strong> his buddy descended to 70 fsw (21 msw);after approximately 10 minutes he signaled tohis buddy that he did not feel well, <strong>and</strong> theybecame separated. The diver’s buddy ascendedal<strong>on</strong>e, but he did not see the missing diverat the surface. A body was never recovered.03-23 Inexperienced diver, surfaced far fromboat, separated from buddy <strong>on</strong> their underwaterswim back <strong>and</strong> lostCause of Death: Unknown Cause of Death,Body Not RecoveredWhile this 29-year-old female had advancedopen-water certificati<strong>on</strong>, she had made fewerthan 20 dives since initial certificati<strong>on</strong> threeyears before. The dive profile was not available,but she <strong>and</strong> her buddy surfaced far fromthe boat <strong>and</strong> descended again to swim back.The buddy became low <strong>on</strong> air, <strong>and</strong> both diverswere fatigued. They became separated, <strong>and</strong>the buddy was rescued <strong>on</strong> the surface a fewhours later. He never surfacedfrom an open-water dive.
