The four model projects are:<br />

(1) Aweil Irrigation Rehabilitation Project (Eur<br />

5.7M), (2) Tambura-Wau Market Access (Eur<br />

6M), (3) Bahr el Ghazal Livestock Market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Project (Eur 5.3M), <strong>and</strong> (4) Nyal-Shambe-<br />

Terekaka Fisheries Production <strong>and</strong> Market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Project (Eur 4.9M).<br />

The EC-Funded Project (Eur 20 Million national,<br />

over 5 years) aims to develop an <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>food</strong><br />

<strong>security</strong>, vulnerability <strong>and</strong> market <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

system. SIFSIA is supply<strong>in</strong>g data for the Food<br />

Security Council (key members <strong>in</strong>clude MoFEP,<br />

MAF, MARF <strong>and</strong> MAARIs) to pass decisions<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g policies <strong>and</strong> actions that should<br />

reduce <strong>food</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>security</strong> <strong>in</strong> Southern Sudan. The<br />

Project will be implemented by the Southern<br />

Sudan Centre for Census, Statistics <strong>and</strong><br />

Evaluation (SSCCSE), with FAO support. It will<br />

report to a Food Security Council.<br />

Project Activities are grouped <strong>in</strong>to 3 Ma<strong>in</strong><br />

Components:<br />

1/ Food <strong>security</strong> policy <strong>and</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

systems component: establishment of a Food<br />

Security Council, each composed by a Technical<br />

Secretariat <strong>and</strong> four technical sections; <strong>and</strong><br />

capacity build<strong>in</strong>g through ma<strong>in</strong>ly ‘on the job’<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

2/ Basel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation systems<br />

component: a ‘Household <strong>food</strong> consumption <strong>and</strong><br />

welfare survey’, <strong>and</strong> establishment of three<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation systems: agricultural <strong>and</strong> livestock<br />

market <strong>in</strong>formation system; agricultural<br />

production monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> forecast system; <strong>and</strong><br />

natural resources monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> mapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

system.<br />

3/ Food <strong>security</strong> research <strong>and</strong> capacity build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fund: f<strong>in</strong>ance small scale <strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong> <strong>food</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>secure areas.<br />

Objectives <strong>in</strong>cluded l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g recovery <strong>and</strong><br />

development with the adoption of a<br />

<strong>part</strong>icipatory approach, susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>in</strong> the<br />

capacity build<strong>in</strong>g of local Gvt agencies, ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

synergies with other donors.<br />

Approach: clear l<strong>in</strong>kages between project <strong>and</strong><br />

local development plans.<br />

Every year, as <strong>part</strong> of its emergency operations,<br />

FAO procures <strong>and</strong> distributes seeds <strong>and</strong> tools<br />

through its network of NGOs.<br />
