PURPOSE: Ga<strong>in</strong> an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of the data available, especially for Southern Sudan <strong>and</strong> what<br />
k<strong>in</strong>ds of decision mak<strong>in</strong>g can be done us<strong>in</strong>g the available <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS:<br />
• ESA –ReSAKSS: Knowledge shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> strategic analysis at country level through posted<br />
Country focal po<strong>in</strong>ts. This regional strategic exercise is supported by COMESA, SADC,<br />
ASARECA (e.g. develop<strong>in</strong>g strategies for East Africa) <strong>and</strong> others. Overall global coord<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
rests with IFPRI. The aim to add value by provid<strong>in</strong>g knowledge based recommendations.<br />
• Sources of <strong>in</strong>formation: country databases. Verification <strong>and</strong> feedback: through presentations to<br />
source countries,<br />
• Challenges: add<strong>in</strong>g value to available knowledge by provid<strong>in</strong>g strategic analysis. Identify<br />
analytical gaps, Act as th<strong>in</strong>k tank for governments <strong>and</strong> donors<br />
• Examples of products:<br />
− Themes: Non-Tariff trade barriers; common external tariff for COMESA; regional <strong>food</strong><br />
<strong>security</strong> <strong>and</strong> vulnerability assessment; monitor<strong>in</strong>g development issues; trends<br />
(<strong>in</strong>dicators) reports.<br />
− Tools: Development Doma<strong>in</strong> Tools that provides assessments of agricultural potential<br />
<strong>and</strong> impact on poverty reduction based on three country <strong>and</strong> regional data/ <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
sources: Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Natural Resources; Human Population Density, <strong>and</strong> Access to<br />
Markets <strong>and</strong> Trade. The tools are packaged <strong>in</strong> a way that allows for <strong>in</strong>dividual use <strong>in</strong><br />
identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestment potentials<br />
− GIS pool: developed by IFPRI to provide knowledge about certa<strong>in</strong> commodities that<br />
help <strong>in</strong> policy decision mak<strong>in</strong>g, what commodities to grow <strong>and</strong> where to grow them, etc.<br />
