CH-TRAMPAC Document Rev. 2, May 2005Table 5.2-11 – Maximum Allowable Total Gas Release Rates for WasteType IV55-Gallon DrumDirect Load SWBWaste Type IV Payload Container55-gallon drum in SWB overpack85-Gallon Drum, 85-Gallon Drum Overpack, or 55-GallonDrum in 85-Gallon Drum Overpack100-Gallon DrumMaximum Allowable TotalGas Release Rate(mol/s/container) 3.97E-061.98E-059.87E-065.90E-061.02E-05Notes: The maximum total gas release rates (in moles per second per payload container) were determined fromanalysis as described in Section 3.4.4 of the TRUPACT-II 7 and HalfPACT 8 SARs. If the measured gas release rate exceeds the maximum total gas release rate per container, the container mayqualify for shipment using the methodology for evaluation of compliance with the payload total gas release ratelimits described in Section 6.2.5.[G][H][I]Record the measured FGGR for the payload container (Section 5 of the Data Sheet). If flammable VOCs are present in the container headspace at concentrations less than orequal to 500 ppm, as determined in Step B, determine the maximum allowable hydrogengas generation rate for the corresponding shipping category (as listed in Table 5.2-1 or asdetermined in accordance with the methodology described in Section 5.2.3). Record themaximum allowable hydrogen gas generation rate (Section 5 of the Data Sheet).Compare the measured FGGR to the allowable rate limit. If the measured FGGR of the container is less than or equal to the maximum allowablehydrogen gas generation rate for the corresponding shipping category, then the containermay be shipped if compliance with all other transportation requirements is demonstrated. If the measured FGGR of the container exceeds the maximum allowable hydrogen gasgeneration rate, the container may be reassessed for compliance with transportationrequirements through the evaluation of a payload with different shipping categories ordunnage containers, as described in Section 6.2.4. Otherwise, the container shall bereconfigured or mitigative measures shall be adopted. If VOCs are present in the container headspace at concentrations greater than 500 ppm,as demonstrated in Step C, calculate the predicted innermost confinement layerflammable gas concentration (X inner ) at the end of the shipping period as:Xinner= CG * R Twhere,CG = Measured FGGR (mole/second)5.2-44
