CH-TRAMPAC Document Rev. 2, May 20056.2.5 Payload Total Gas Release Rate Compliance EvaluationFor containers of Waste Type IV that exceed the total gas release rate limits in Table 5.2-11 inSection 5.2.5.4.5, compliance with the packaging design pressure limit may be demonstrated bycompliance with the total gas release rate limit determined for the payload in which it isassembled. These Waste Type IV payload assemblies may be comprised of other Waste Type IVcontainers, non-Waste Type IV containers, and/or dunnage containers. Each payload assemblyis evaluated through the calculation of the payload total gas release rate, which accounts for thetotal gas release rate of each container in the assembly into the ICV.The total gas release rates of containers of Waste Type IV (TGRR i IV ) shall be determined inaccordance with Section 5.2.5.For payload assemblies of Waste Type IV containers mixed with containers of other waste types, the total gas release rate of the non-Waste Type IV containers (TGGR i other ) shall be calculatedusing the total decay heat of the container as follows:TGRRi otherQ(G(netgas)molecules/100eV)ii= (1)−19NA1.602(10)where,Q i = Decay heat of container i (watts)G(netgas) i = Total gas temperature corrected effective G value (net gas) for container i(molecules of gas formed/100 eV emitted energy) N A = Avogadro’s number = 6.0225(10) 23 molecules/mole.Note: Net gas G values in Appendix 3.2 of the CH-TRU Payload Appendices 1 are corrected using theArrhenius relation to Waste Type IV test temperatures corresponding to the maximum decay heat perpackaging shown in Table 5.2-10 of Section 5.2.5.4.1.The payload total gas release rate, PTGRR, is the sum of the total gas release rates of the gasgenerating containers making up the payload assembly as follows:n IV containers∑i=1nothercontainers∑PTGRR = TGRR i+ TGRR(2)IVi=1i otherA payload qualifies for shipment only if the payload total gas release rate is less than the payloadtotal gas release rate limit calculated below. If the payload total gas release rate exceeds thepayload total gas release rate limit, the payload shall be reconfigured until this requirement issatisfied. The determination of compliance with the payload total gas release rate limit can beperformed either manually or by the use of a verified/validated software package. The payloadtotal gas release rate limit, PTGRRL, is calculated as:−8PTGRRL = 2.26(10) ×Vvoid(3)6.2-30
